Okay, I'm Back

And here's what I've done. I've looked at more fiddler crabs and decided to blow the project out a bit. So I made pen and ink drawings of other kinds of fiddler crabs. God help you if you thought there was just one. Some of these guys have the big claw on the other side. And they are all different colors. Some have antennae and others do not. The shapes of the claws and the legs are all different.. so I made templates of a few of these fellow. And here they are. Soon we'll see the paintings. Emily Scudder and I have decided to put on a two person show. Her poetry and my paintings. So let's get going on the crabs, Okay?

Fiddler Lite

I did this version of the crab in an attempt to make him look more like seafood. While I think I succeeded in that, the overall painting is not nearly as satisfying as the original one. However, I have prepared a bunch of different kinds of paper and will be taking more cracks at the poor fellow. So I am  posting this lest anyone think I'm not working on it.

I'm posting this lest anyone think I've done nothing the entire weekend. I know this is uppermost on everyone's mind. No work on the fiddler crab, so instead I dedided to throw myself at all the vegetables I can name in Spanish. Okay, so here are only los tomates.  Las zanahorias came to a bad end as did los mangos. Los tomates themselves are barely standing. This has nothing at all to do with the two shots of Bushmills single malt ten year old whiskey (fabulously decadent Christmas gift) that I had this evening. These were painted very small on longish postcard sized watercolor paper in liquid acyrlics. I threw myself every which way at it, knowing that I will have a lot of time tomorrow to do better since New England will be snowed in. I called to cancel some unpleasant appointments. Using hand gestures to show my sincere regret (maybe lost over the phone) I also used my words to say how sorry I was. Hope the regrets came across through the toothy grin on my face. Let it snow!!!!
Love,
Jeanne

Fiddler Crab II

So here I am again with that fiddler crab. This time I tried throwing a bunch of color at him. I used liquid acrylics, very wet, almost like water color only not transparent in the same way. I'm getting the proportion on the front claws. Still not there yet. The color needs a lot of work. He's got a lot of salmon in him, yeah well he would, what with being seafood and all. What I didn't paint was the enormous amounts of grey in the legs. I did try a bit of the coloring on the large claw. When I was done he was almost entirely without definition, so I took some pen and ink and gave him some shape. The markings on the head are going to be the very devil to get right. But tonight I gave him some eyes.

The Fiddler Crab

Emily Scudder, the poet, is having her second chapbook published and she's asked me to do the cover. Yoicks! Here's a chance to rise to an occaision. I've chosen the fiddler crab --very symbolic of Emily's poetry. Right before Emily asked me to do this I had set myself a goal of fifty new works for the art website this year. I've decided to post my progress on the blog and count my preliminary works towards the goal. Here we have my very first pass at this amazing fellow (or gal). I did this in india ink with a very thick bamboo pen. I didn't want to try and fine tune too much in the beginning. I think I have the proportions about 90% right. He needs a bit more life to him. The finished piece has to be no more than 8 x 10 inches. I'm not used to working that small. I want to do Emily's work justice. She is a fine, gritty, funny, exuberant and earthy writer. I wonder if the medium I am most used to working in --watercolor-- is right for this piece. We'll all find out soon.
